Antefortressian Year 0 (AF 0) was the final stretch of the Antefortressian era before the founding of the Pillow Fortress and lasted approximately eighteen days, from January 1st to January 19th, 2018 of the Gregorian calendar. Much of the early work on the Principality had been completed by the start of AF 0, such as the drafting of the State Charter and the initial designs of the Throne, Directory, and Supreme Court, and though the Summer Constitution was not yet complete, many of its major provisions were already decided upon. The Principality could have been declared at any time during AF 0, but it was believed that there needed to be a suitable justification for optics reasons. This came on midnight, January 20th with the start of the January 2018 United States federal government shutdown, and event which in the grand scheme of things had little importance or bearing on the Pillow Fortress, but which could be spun as the sort of governmental excess and absurdity the Principality was intended to transcend.
